The Temple of Solomon

2 Ch. 2:17 "And Solomon numbered all the strangers..."

The Temple that Solomon built took nearly 200,000 workers and 7 years to complete (cf. 2 Chronicles 2:17,18).

They used 4,000 TONS of gold and 40,000 TONS of silver  (cf. 2 Chronicles 3:8).

Someone estimated that the total cost of the Temple (in today's dollars) was about $60 BILLION dollars.

1. The Manner of his Approach

2 Chronicles 6:12 "And he stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands:"

This is a unique prayer from the Old Testament - of a formal prayer uttered on a great state occasion.

Solomon recognized that God did NOT need the Temple that he has built (Acts 7:47-50).

2 Chronicles 6:18 "But will God in very deed dwell with men on the earth? behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house which I have built!"

What a view of the immensity of God!

God's relation to duration, His eternity.

A recognition of God's infinite supremacy.

"Prayer is the nearest approach to God and the highest enjoyment of Him that we are capable of in this life." ~ William Law ~

2. The Matters in his Appeal

2 Chronicles 6:15 "Thou which hast kept with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him; and spakest with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day."

 This relates to that part of God's promises to David which was literally fulfilled!

 That God would also fulfil the other great promises of kindness to his posterity.

 Our God is a PROMISE keeping God!

V.16 "...yet so that thy children take heed to their way to walk in my law, as thou hast walked before me."

The promises of God are often connected with the faithfulness of His people;

In fulfilling their conditions, they will then obtain their blessings.

Our Present Day Churches

These are huge cathedrals, but virtually no one uses them to worship God. They've become basically irrelevant for the cause of Christ.

They became places for museums rather than places for ministries.

God doesn't NEED our building... but our building will NEED HIM!

3. The Main Aim of his Attendance

2 Chronicles 6:19 "Have respect therefore to the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O LORD my God, to hearken unto the cry and the prayer which thy servant prayeth before thee:" (cf.20,21,23,25,27,30,33,35,39).

Solomon desired that his prayer will be heard by God;

How empty if our prayers are only heard by the people!
