Sermon Outline

 Introduction

The Creation of Image

The Corruption of Image

The Re-Creation of Image

Conclusion and Application

1. The Creation of Image

Genesis 1:27 "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."

God made him in his own likeness, righteous and holy, and therefore, happy.

Man's nature resembled the divine nature more than that of any of the creatures of this lower world.

Q.10: How did God create man?

Answer:

"God created man male and female, after his own image, in knowledge, righteousness, and holiness, with dominion over the creatures." ~ The Shorter Catechism ~

Genesis 2:7 "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."

Man is unique among all God's creations, having both a material body and an immaterial soul/spirit.

It is a likeness mentally, morally, and mutually.

Mentally: Humanity was created as a rational, volitional agent.

Morally: Humanity was created in righteousness and perfect innocence, a reflection of God's holiness.

Mutually: Humanity was created for fellowship.

This reflects God's triune nature and His love.

Part of being made in God's image is that Adam had the capacity to make free choices.

2. The Corruption of Image

Ecclesiastes 7:29 "Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions."

A testimony concerning man's original sin, and his wretched state by nature;

All that is excellent in man is from God; his sinfulness and folly are his own.

Romans 5:12 "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:"

Adam when he fell, he became corrupt…his image, sinful and defiled, frail, mortal, and miserable.;

The image of God is defaced, but not entirely lost, it can be restored into a more perfect form.

"Grace does not run in the blood, but corruption does. A sinner begets a sinner, but a saint does not beget a saint." ~ MATTHEW HENRY

3. The Re-Creation of Image

Colossians 3:10 "And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:"

In reality, what people need is not an external cosmetic makeover;

They need an inner transformation!

A true and saving knowledge of Christ!

Ephesians 4:24 "And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness."

Through Christ, we are made new creations in the likeness of God.

2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

We are meant to be the "image / idols" of Yahweh, the physical representation of a spiritual reality to help others see God.

Christians are now full representatives of God in His creation.

Conclusion

Man is living in sins, without the true God he is lost without hope;

The only hope for sinners is in the true knowledge of Christ;

Having been saved, we are to be a physical representation of Jesus Christ in our time and every place.

May the world see the Beauty of Jesus Christ in us!
