Sermon Outline

.   Introduction

The Misery of the Helpless

2. The Mission of the Helpers

3. The Ministry of the Healer

.   Conclusion

Introduction

.   This miracle only recorded by the Evangelist Mark...the companion of Apostle Peter (cf. John 1:44).

.   Out of the 35 miracles of Jesus, 7 of them have to do with blindness.

.   Jesus spent more than a year in this region of Galilee, out of 3 years of His earthly ministry.

1. The Misery of the Helpless

.   Mark 8:22  "And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him."

.   He did not seem to care about the possibility of any cure, and not having much hope;

.   He is slow of faith - the gradual process of Christ's healing...taking him thru each step.

.   "He was healed slowly because he believed slowly. "

Blind Bartimaeus

.   Mark 10:47-48  "And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me."

.   Mark 8:23a "And he took (gripped) the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town..."

.   "God stoops to a feeble faith, and gives to it outward things by which it may rise to an apprehension of spiritual realities."

~ Alexander MacLaren ~

2. The Mission of the Helpers

.   Mark 8:22 "And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him." (cf. Gen.18:23; 1 Sam.25:23-25)

.   A lesson for all good-hearted Christian men and women, in all their works;

.   Going to the level of the afflicted and doing what they cannot do for themselves.

.   Leading them to the Saviour who alone can help and convert.

.   Mark 8:22  "And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him."

.   No use preaching about dogmas and principles - give them the facts of His incarnation and life.

.   "It is of no use to talk to men about God - let them see Him!"

.   "Revelation does not consist in the setting forth of certain propositions about God, but in the exhibition of the acts of God in a human life." Alexander MacLaren

3. The Ministry of the Healer

.   Mark 8:23b "...and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought."

.   "He veils spiritual truths in common things that He may reveal it by common means - eg. fishermen's boats, their nets, a sower's basket, a baker's dough, many other homely article...and finding in them the emblems of the loftiest truth."

.   Mark 8:25 "After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly." (saw afar off)

.   The second touch of Christ and His saliva healed, not because of any power in them; but because He willed it;

.   Remember that in Him alone, not in them, lies the healing power!

.   Mark 8:26 "And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town."

.   Last miracle in Bethsaida - end of His public ministry in Galilee...never again to return to Bethsaida!

.   Jesus taking the final journey towards Jerusalem.

.   What is the end of this city, Bethsaida?

.   Matthew 11:20-21 "Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes."
