Man's Questions

Christ's Answers

Conclusion

His Qualities

Mark 10:17 "And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?"

He was not ashamed to "run" to meet Christ;

He was reverential for he "kneeled" in His presence;

His outward life was blameless and "perfect".

Mark 10:20 "And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth."

These duties of the 2nd table of the law - Man's relationship with others.

According to the Pharisees' interpretation, they only condemned the grosser sins, outward acts and not the inward lust and motion of the heart.

His Question

Mark 10:17 "And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?"

He came to the right person with a right question.

He had a desire after spiritual blessings.

Christ's Queries

Mark 10:18 "And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God."

What was his view of Christ? A mere man?

No mere man is absolutely and perfectly good of himself.

Romans 3:10-12 "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God...there is none that doeth good, no, not one."

Christ's Challenge

Mark 10:21 "Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me."

Note the Action words:

"Go, Sell, Give, Come, Take, Follow"

"There was something he was asked to give up; something to take up; and Someone to follow."

Treasure in Heaven

Mark 10:22 "And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions."

"You must detach yourself from your possessions and attach yourself to Christ."

Christ's Comment

Mark 10:23 "And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!"

It is not possible to serve God and money.

Matthew 6:24 "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."

God will only dwell in our hearts alone or never. He cannot share with someone or something else.

He has to reign without a rival. It is all or none at all!

Christ's Comfort

Mark 10:27 "And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible."

The great difficulty of salvation for men;

Yet the mighty God is able to overcome all obstacles and move the hearts of men.

Salvation of the Lord alone!

Conclusion

The "one thing" that this young man lacked was an attitude of total obedience to Christ!

This "one thing" is single-hearted devotedness to the Lord Jesus Christ!
