Introduction
"Once" - "Once only;
once for all". This is
an adverb denying a
repetition;
This expression is in effect an
abbreviation for "one time and for all
time."
It implies that it will
not be done again.
As a settled matter, finally,
permanently, decisively
(Cf. Heb 7:27; 9:12;
10:10).
Once for All
Hebrews 7:27 "Who
needeth not daily, as
those high priests, to
offer up sacrifice,
first for his own sins,
and then for the
people's: for this he
did once, when he
offered up himself."
Hebrews 10:10 "By the
which will we are
sanctified through the
offering of the body of
Jesus Christ once for
all."
1. Christ's Sacrifice
Heb. 9:26 "For then must
he often have suffered
since the foundation of
the world: but now once
in the end of the world
hath he appeared to put
away sin by the
sacrifice of himself."
The blood offered by the
Jewish priest was that
of animals; that offered
by the Saviour was His
own.
It removes transgression
from the soul.
Hebrews 9:28 "So Christ
was once offered to bear
the sins of many; and
unto them that look for
him shall he appear the
second time without sin
unto salvation."
The offering which
Christ made was wholly
for others; that of the
Jewish priest for
himself as well as for
other offerers.
2. Man's Sentence
Hebrews 9:27 "And as it
is appointed unto men
once to die, but after
this the judgment:"
It is not the effect of
chance.
It is not that man is
merely subjected to the
laws of nature.
It is the result
of intelligent
appointment, and there
is an adequate cause.
Romans 5:12 "Wherefore,
as by one man sin
entered into the world,
and death by sin; and so
death passed upon all
men, for that all have
sinned:"
We are all under
sentence of death!
It is for sin that all
are doomed to death.
The poor wretch in the
dungeon; the king in his
palace!
Genesis 3:19 "In the
sweat of thy face shalt
thou eat bread, till
thou return unto the
ground; for out of it
wast thou taken: for
dust thou art, and unto
dust shalt thou return."
Man is in the state of
mortality;
He had become liable to
all the miseries of this
life and to the pains of
death.
Only one life
You can take all the
treasures
From far away lands,
And take all the riches
you can hold in your
hands.
And take all the
pleasures
Your riches can buy,
But will it help
When it's your time to
die?
Chorus:
Only one life
So soon it will pass,
Only what's done for
Christ will last.
Only one chance to do
His will
So give to Jesus all
your days.
It's the only life that
pays,
When you recall
You have but one life!
2. Man's Sentence
Hebrews 9:27 "And as it
is appointed unto men
once to die, but after
this the judgment:"
Man is to be judged
once, but once and will
not to be repeated;
The decision is final,
and no one can repeal.
Ecclesiastes 12:14 "For
God shall bring every
work into judgment, with
every secret thing,
whether it be good, or
whether it be evil."
"There was a remarkable
oneness in the great
events which most
affected men; and
neither death, the
judgment, nor the
atonement could be
repeated." (Barnes)
3. God's Salvation
Hebrews 9:28 "So Christ
was once offered to bear
the sins of many; and
unto them that look for
him shall he appear the
second time without sin
unto salvation."
Christ has accomplished
his work;
He comes to save them
from all their sins.
Now God provides eternal
salvation to all who
will believe.
Hebrews 7:25
"Wherefore he is able
also to save them to the
uttermost that come unto
God by him, seeing he
ever liveth to make
intercession for them."
1 Peter 5:10-11
"But the God of all
grace, who hath called
us unto his eternal
glory by Christ Jesus,
after that ye have
suffered a while, make
you perfect, stablish,
strengthen, settle you.
To him be glory and
dominion for ever and
ever. Amen."
